From a boutique Sydney practice founded in 1999 to one of Australia's most respected independent business advisory firms — our history is defined by the outcomes we deliver for clients.
Keystone Advisory Partners was established in Sydney in 1999 by senior management consultant David Hartley, following an 18-year career spanning roles at two of Australia's largest professional services firms. David's founding conviction was straightforward: Australian businesses deserved a boutique advisory practice that delivered the rigour of a large firm with the personal accountability of a small one.
The practice opened with a focus on strategic planning and operational improvement for mid-market companies across New South Wales. Within three years, Keystone had expanded its team to eight consultants and broadened its capabilities to include mergers and acquisitions, human resources transformation, and investment risk advisory.
Over the following two decades, Keystone grew through referral — never through mass marketing — building a reputation for discretion, intellectual honesty, and an uncompromising commitment to client outcomes. Today, with twelve senior consultants and more than 400 completed engagements, Keystone remains privately held and resolutely independent.
Each decade brought new capabilities, new sectors, and a deeper understanding of what Australian businesses truly need from a trusted advisor.
David Hartley establishes Keystone Advisory Partners in Sydney CBD with an initial team of three, focusing on strategic planning for NSW mid-market businesses.
Keystone adds M&A advisory and HR transformation practices, appoints its first principal partners, and completes its first cross-border deal advisory.
The firm reaches its 100th completed engagement. Investment risk assessment practice formally established amid global financial uncertainty.
A dedicated market research and intelligence division is launched, providing structured industry analysis and competitor benchmarking to Australian corporates.
Keystone formally establishes its conflict management and dispute resolution practice, led by accredited mediators with governance expertise.
Keystone celebrates 25 years, with 400+ completed engagements, 12 senior consultants, and a 96% client retention rate — continuing to grow through referral alone.
These four principles underpin every client relationship, every recommendation, and every outcome we pursue.
We tell clients what they need to hear, not what they want to hear. Honest counsel — even when uncomfortable — is the foundation of every long-term advisory relationship. We will never recommend an engagement that is not in the client's genuine interest.
We hold ourselves to the highest professional standards. Our work is characterised by analytical depth, clear thinking, and actionable recommendations. Mediocrity is simply not something we are prepared to deliver — to any client, at any fee level.
Our clients' interests always take precedence over our own commercial interests. We do not carry conflicts of interest, we do not accept referral fees from third parties, and we do not over-scope engagements. Success is measured exclusively by client outcomes.
Business advisory work by its nature involves sensitive commercial information. Every member of the Keystone team is bound by strict confidentiality obligations. We have never had a data breach or confidentiality incident in 25 years of practice.
Every Keystone engagement is led by a principal consultant. You will always have direct access to the senior advisor responsible for your outcomes.
